Abstract Submission Instructions & Guidelines
LATE ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS
Abstract Submissions will be closed on the 30 April 2008.
Should you wish to make a late submission please email it through to Kerryd@turnergroup.co.za and it will be forwarded onto the Scientific Committee for possible inclusion in the programme.
Please ensure that your abstract is in the template provided and that the following information is provided in your email when your abstract is emailed to Kerry:
- A list of the authors and their affiliations
- Which section and symposium this submission is for
- Do you prefer an oral or poster presentation
Proposals are invited for papers to be presented at the ICE 2008 Congress. Submitted papers should be topical, current and preferably address one of the conference Sections outlined above.
Closing date for all oral and poster submissions: 28 February 2008
All Abstracts MUST be submitted online.
ORAL PAPERS
To submit a proposal to give a paper:
- Prepare an abstract of your presentation of not more than 250 words excluding the title, authors and addresses. The abstract should provide a summary of the content of your proposed paper - please refer to the example provided below or on the Congress website at www.ice2008.org.za
- Abstracts must be presented in the following format:
- as an MS Word file (Word 97 or later) as per the template that will be emailed to you when you register on the online abstract submission system. Use Arial font throughout.
- First line: 11 point font, bold. Title of your presentation
- Body text: 10 point font. Headings bold. Each heading at start of new line.
- If your presentation has been invited into a specific symposium, please state it is an "invited submission" and give the name and number of that symposium.
- Submit your abstract/s online.
- Presenters of oral papers must use PowerPoint (97or later) presentation. No other form or projection will be available.
Requests for oral presentations will only be accepted in the above format and by the due date of 28 February 2008.
Authors of abstracts accepted for oral presentation will be notified as soon as possible after this date. It is anticipated that the number of submissions for oral presentation will exceed the number of presentation slots available. Where submissions cannot be accommodated as oral presentations, the Section Convenors may elect to allocate them as posters. Authors will be provided with sufficient notice where this occurs.
Presentation of oral papers will use PowerPoint. Authors will be contacted on how to submit their presentation.
POSTERS
To submit a proposal to present a poster
- Prepare an abstract of your poster of not more than 250 words, excluding the title, authors and addresses. The abstract should provide a summary of the content of your proposed poster - please refer to the example poster provided on the Congress website at www.ice2008.org.za
- Abstracts must be presented in the following format:
- As a MS Word file (Word 97 or later) as per the template that will be emailed to you when you register on the online abstract submission system. Use Arial font throughout.
- First line: 11 Point font, bold. Title of your presentation.
- Body text: 10 point font. Headings in bold. Each heading at start of new line.
- Submit your abstract/s online at www.ice2008.org.za
All poster proposals and abstracts must be received by 28 February 2008. Authors of abstracts accepted for poster presentation will be notified as soon as possible after this date.
For presentation at Congress, your poster must comply with the following specifications:
- Poster should preferably be laminated.
- Maximum poster size is 1 metre across (from left to right) by 1.5 metres depth (top to bottom).
- Accepted poster presentations will be allocated a POSTER NUMBER - posters must be erected at the site with the corresponding number during the allocated poster session.
- Posters must be erected using VELCRO DOTS only. Please apply velcro "rough" dots to the reverse side of posters.
- After the allocated poster session, authors must remove their posters by the nominated removal time. Failure to do so will result in their removal by the Congress organisers who will not be responsible for posters not removed by the due time.

ACCEPTANCE OF SUBMISSIONS AND ABSTRACTS
Slots have been left in all Symposia for inclusion of relevant submitted papers. It is the policy of the ICE 2008 Congress to accept all submissions, however, due to space constraints, it is likely that some oral submissions will have to be changed to poster presentations. This will be done at the discretion of the Section Convenors and ample notice will be given to the presenters. In each Section space is available for papers in areas other than the listed Symposia, and in some cases it may be possible to group them into a "mini-symposium" covering a specific area. Papers submitted at an early date are more likely to be accepted as oral presentations
To facilitate delegates who will need to request funding from other sources, we will be able to supply letters of acceptance of presentations as soon as abstracts have been received (although these will not specify whether the presentation is oral or a poster).
You must register as a delegate and pay your registration fee to the ICE 2008 Congress prior to 30 April 2008 to have your paper submission (Oral or Poster presentations) scheduled in the ICE 2008 Congress programme
Papers that have been previously accepted will be deleted from the programme if the presenting author has not registered and paid by this date
Deadline for receipt of Abstracts: 28 February 2008
All presentations must be submitted online.

Introduction: In Mantophasmatodea, both sexes produce vibrational communication signals. Two sympatric species, Karoophasma biedouwensis and an undescribed species, were used to determine the role of communication in a) species identity and b) potential mate location.
Methods: Vibrational signals were recorded from laboratory-reared adults drumming directly onto the membrane of a loudspeaker. The digitized signals were analyzed using Sound Forge Software and were used in one-sided stimulation playback experiments. The responses of males and females to different calls were monitored on a Y-shaped apparatus.
Results: Each sex produced a distinctive call. The female call consisted of repeated single pulses, whereas the more complex male call comprised repeated pulse trains. The calls of males and females of the two species were of similar general structure, but differed in most temporal characters such as pulse and pulse train repetition time. Females reacted to the call of conspecific males by calling and becoming less active, but did not react to the call of heterospecific males. Males exhibited abdominal rubbing, high tapping rates, increased activity and characteristic searching behaviour at the fork of the Y apparatus when presented with the call of a conspecific female. These responses were significantly depressed when males were stimulated with the call of a heterospecific female, or of a conspecific male.
Conclusions: Temporal features of the vibrational signals used by duetting male and female Mantophasmatodea convey cues for both mate location and species recognition.
